Schedule Back-to-School Dental Exams and Require Kids to Wear a Mouthguards for Athletics
With the school year upon us, the Connecticut State Dental Association (CSDA) is urging parents to add two more items to their back to school to-do list. The CSDA wants each student to have a dental checkup, and is encouraging all student athletes to wear mouthguards for protection regardless of the sport.
They feel that dental exams are necessary to help combat dental decay which is the single most prevalent childhood disease. Scheduling examinations to coincide with the start of the school year is a great way for parents to prevent their children from developing dental problems during the school year and possible missing valuable study time.
"Parents and their children have very busy schedules so it is not uncommon to overlook dental examinations during the course of the year", said Dr.Carolyn Malon, CSDA President. "However, it is imperative that each student receives a dental exam and cleaning at least twice a year. Tooth decay is an infectious disease that can affect your child's health, education, and well being."
Research has proven that kids who do not receive dental care are more likely to miss a significant number of school days due to tooth pain that can lead to difficulty eating, speaking, and concentrating. It is equally important for student athletes to wear mouthguards for protection. Students can be fitted for a mouthguard or recommended one while at their back-to-school dental exam.
" A mouthguard is as important as a helmet and any other protective device", said Dr. Malon. Mouthguards are particularly important for student athletes who wear braces. A blow to the face can damage the brackets and other components, and the use of a mouthguard will protect students lip's and cheeks from soft tissue damage caused by braces. Student athletes with braces should talk to their dentists about selecting mouthguards that will provide them with the best protection.
